Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation of the Federal Government of Somalia along with Somalia NGO Consortium held one day NGO consultative forum in Mogadishu to discuss the Development of the National Plan.

“There was a perception that the government was antagonistic towards NGOs but the government wants the people to benefit from the activities of the NGOs. The NDP will have priorities and the government wants the NDP to be a reference book for NGOs. The government has decided that this plan would be from the people and to the people and it’s a very participatory plan” said H.E Abdi Dirshe the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Planning and International Cooperation in his opening remarks.

Abdurahman Sharif Director of Somali NGO consortium addressed in his remarks “The discussion is how to coordinate the activities to Somalia between the NGO’s and the Government and all NGO’s are ready to work with MoPIC regarding the NDP.

The NGO consortiums had regular engagements with the Somali government since June 2015. More and more NGOs are basing in Mogadishu so it is a good sign that things are changing”

A very important milestone reached as a result of this meeting and it is a good base to move forward and here are the way forward that came out of the meeting

  • A project board should be put together that brings NGOs, government, and other interest groups together
  • The final reports has to say that the government has a lead on the process and must be acknowledged
  • Government is here to assist, support and play a more active role in facilitating NGO activities
